Jay Diebold - Class of '56

Tri-Sport athlete Jay Diebold lettered in football, basketball and baseball all three years of High School. In 1955 he was All Conference And All State Honorable Mention in football and played on the All-State Championship American Legion Baseball Team. Jay took advantage of all that Edina offered In addition to sports, Jay sang in the choir, participated in theater productions and served on the Student Council. Jay implores today's students to engage in as many extra-curricular activities as possible. Jay says "The skills you develop and use during these extra-curricular activities will stay with you and be used the rest of your life." Jay attend the University of Minnesota where earned a B.A. in Liberal Arts. Jay served six and a half years in the United States Air Force. Jay had a long career with Control Data Corporation and retired in 2005. He now spends time traveling with his wife and visiting his two sons and grandchildren.

Tony Mayo - Class of '61

Running standout Tony Mayo is considered to be on of the best all around runners in Lake Conference history. His specialties were the 440 and 880 races but he excelled at all distances from the 220 to cross-country. Tony anchored the 1961 State Championship mile relay team. Tony lettered four years in cross country and three in track. Sidetracked by illness in college, Tony had to give up running, but poured his energies into the arts. Tony studied at St. Cloud State where he received a BS in Art Education and a Masters of Arts, and continued on to the University of Minnesota where he receive d a Master of Fine Arts in Glass Blowing and a Double Minor in Ceramics and Art History. Tony has had an amazing career creating and teaching art in both Minnesota and Canada. Tony and his wife Holly have three children and two grandchildren.

Tom Cabalka- Class of '69

In 1968 and 1969, Tom Cabalka played on three State Championship teams in three different sports - baseball, basketball and football (Edina West). Tom was named All-Conference in football and selected as Captain of the basketball team. Tom remembers the 1968 EHS basketball season with fondness, "We were the team that everyone wanted to beat. We had a target on our backs - every team was aiming to upset us. Playing at Williams Arena before 17,000 fans of which only 2000 were cheering for the Green and White was motivating!" Tom's athletic prowess earned him a scholarship to the University of Iowa where he played starting linebacker in football his sophomore year and moving to the starting tight-end position for his junior and senior years. Tom has spent the last 36 years teaching and coaching football and golf at the High School level in Middleton, Wisconsin. Tom lives in Middleton with his wife Carol. They have three grown children and love going to their cabin.

Paula Buie - Class of '78

Scholar Athlete Paula Buie won the Athena Award in 1978, and 32 years late her niece Corinne Buie received the same honor in 2010. Paula distinguished herself on both the tennis and basketball courts. Paula played varsity Tennis for four years and was selected Captain and named All-Conference in her senior year. Paula also qualified for the State Tournament with her doubles partner. In the winter, Paula played basketball. Paula made the All-Conference teams in both '77 and '78 seasons. Paula attended Gustavus Adolphus where she played tennis, fast pitch softball and soccer. Paula graduated from Gustavus in 1982 with a degree in Physical Education and Adaptive PE and earned a Masters of Education degree from Hamline. She has built a wonderful career coaching high school and college athletes. Today Paula lives in St. Paul with her partner, and says her favorite time is spent at the cabin with family and friends.

Chuck Mooty - Class of '79

Chuck Mooty, along with fellow teammates Chris Perry and Jim Kidd led the Edina West Cougars to two golf State Championships in 1977 and 1978. Chuck says "Some of the best golfers in the state made our team simply untouchable." Chuck lettered in golf all three years, and in his junior and senior years he placed in the top ten in the State in individual play. A three-year letterman in basketball, Chuck was named captain of the team in his senior year. Chuck tore his ACL mid-way through the basketball season, but came back in the spring to compete in golf and to pitch for the baseball team. After graduation Chuck attended the University of Minnesota an played intramural sports all through college. Chuck and his wife continue to live in Edina and enjoy spending time at their cabin with their three grown children.

Ben Hankinson - Class of '87

Ben remembers his years at Edina with great fondness as he played both hockey and baseball. The 1985-1986 season was especially memorable as Ben played both sports with his brother Peter. In 1987, Ben led the hockey to to State, was selected MVP and All Conference. Ben also played in the MN High School hockey Maroon and Gold game and was named to the All Tournament team in the USA Junior Olympic Tournament. In the spring of 1987 Ben was drafted by the New Jersey Devils. Ben played college hockey at the University of Minnesota where he led the Gophers to two WCHA Championships, four NCAA tournaments, set the career penalty minute record and still received the University's Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. After graduation Ben played seven years of professional hockey and is not the USA Director of Player Representation of Octagon Hockey. Ben lives in Edina with his wife Gwen and three boys, all of whom play hockey.

Kelly Halverson Wrobel - Class of '97

From 1994 to 1996 two-sport phenomenon Kelly Halverson dominated both the basketball and softball venues for Edina. Distinguished by her tenacity on the basketball court, three-time letter winner, Kelly, earned two All Year Conference Awards and All-State Basketball team Honorable mention and was named an Exceptional Leader during her senior season. Kelly attend the University of St. Thomas where she played basketball, was named Rookie of the Year and made it to the NCAA Final Four tournament. Today Kelly lives in Louisville Kentucky with husband Mike and puppy Charlie.

Dave Jenson - Class of '76 and Boys' Varsity soccer coach

Edina graduate Dave Jenson returned to his alma mater in 1985 to coach the Varsity Boys soccer team. In 2001, Dave made Minnesota State Soccer history by coaching the Hornets to its third consecutive State AA Championship, a feat never before accomplished. These three teams amassed a record of 55-7-5, and produced several All-State players. In 2001 Dave was named the National Soccer Coaches Association Regional Coach of the year, and was a finalist for National Coach of the Year. It is difficult to believe that Dave only played soccer for one year at Edina. However, he focused on the sport in college where he played both at Belmont Academy and the University of St. Thomas. Dave's dedication to the sport of soccer has been fueled by a 26-year commitment to the USA Cup, the largest co-ed soccer tournament in the United States. Dave's leadership and character are the traits most cited by former students who played on his roster. Dave's consistent message is "it's not me - it's us."
