Ron Kosteliz - Coach

Ron Kosteliz' career with Edina began in 1968. From 1968-1975 Kosteliz was the assistant football coach where his team won numerous conference championships and three "mythical" state championships. He was also the assistant coach for the shot put and discus on the track and field team where the Hornets won three state championships. From 1975-1981 Kosteliz was the head football coach at Edina East High School, and in 1982 when the two Edina schools merged he became the assistant football and track coach. In 1990, Coach Kosteliz transitioned to the full time coaching position. Kosteliz was selected by his peers to coach the Metro-All Stars in the Metro State All-Star football game in 1991. After 36 successful years of coaching and teaching, Kosteliz retired in 1999. "I had the greatest kids and the greatest job in the world," said Kosteliz. His advice for today's youth, "Give to your ability and you will never second guess yourself. And have a few laughs!"

Steve Paulsen - Coach

Steve Paulsen has been in the game of tennis most of his life and career. He played tennis at Northfield High School and in 1988 took over as Boys Varsity Coach at Edina High School and led the team for five years, winning the state tournament in 1988, '89 and '92. In 1992 he accepted the position of Girls Varsity Coach at Edina and won the state championship in his first year. After a four-year absence from the state tournament, his teams have captured the state championship for 15 straight years, tying the national record. During his tenure with the girls Edina has won six state singles championships and seven state doubles championships. His overall record at Edina is 442-11. "I have great memories of many wonderful kids both on and off the court. It is intrinsically rewarding to see these young athletes develop as plays and young adults." Paulsen is married to Jody and has two daughters.

Doug King - Class of '64

A varsity player in three sports, Doug King boasts many achievements as an Edina athlete. His senior year, King was named All-Conference in football. That year, he earned All-State status in hockey as well. And, he excelled in varsity baseball as a third baseman. In football King remembers the team's only loss to Richfield in 1964 but savors the sweet victory over top ranked Rochester the last game of the year. One of his career highlights was playing in the State high School Hockey tournament in 1962. King attended Colorado College on a hockey scholarship. There he earned All-Conference honors in his fourth sport, lacrosse. Today, King lives in Edina with his wife Ging. He has served on the Edina Park Board and the Children's Cancer Research Society. In his free time King loves being a grandfather, golfing and being with friends. He continues to be an avid sports fan as well.

John Darkenwald - Class of '65

During his senior year, John Darkenwald was recognized for his talents in football when he was name Lake Conference lineman of the year. In addition, he was twice awarded the WCCO Prep Parade Week All State Award. While at Edina, he also was on the ski jumping and slalom team. Darkenwald played on the last University of Minnesota football team to win the Big Ten Championship in 1967. He had a unique combination of talents at the U of M, graduating with a major in Fine Arts while maintaining a football scholarship. Darkenwald's path to success in collegiate football began on the Edina gridiron. He attributes much of his athletic accomplishments to his great coaching staff and his relationships with teammates. A current resident of Elk River, he enjoys farming, landscaping, traveling and fishing. He and his wife Tony have raised three children.

Mike Carroll - Class of '75

Mike Carroll had an outstanding career as an athlete at Edina East, and his passion for athletics continues into his career today as a coach. Carroll lettered in soccer, hockey and baseball during his time at Edina and received an All-Conference award in baseball. He has a deep appreciation for his Edina upbringing, and knows the opportunities available are second to none. After graduating from Edina in 1975, Carroll went on to play both baseball and hockey at Mankato State. He was named All-Conference, All-Region, MVP and Captain in baseball. After graduating with a BS in Recreation, Parks and Leisure services, Carroll went on to play two years of professional baseball with the Montreal Expos (now Washington Nationals) as a first baseman and outfielder. Carroll lives in North Mankato with his wide Terri. He coaches both baseball and women's hockey at Gustavus Adolphus College where he has been named MIAC Coach of the Year five times.

Brock Maiser - Class of '91

Winning was not the only thing that mattered for Brock Maiser, but he was responsible for many big victories during his athletic career at Edina. Maiser was a three-sport athlete, playing soccer, basketball and baseball. Winning the Conference championships in both soccer and basketball rank among his favorite memories while at Edina. In addition, his senior year the basketball team was ranked No. 1 in the state and their successful season went all the way to clinching a berth in the State Tournament. Maiser went on to Austin Peay State University where he played baseball and was named to the Ohio Valley All-Conference team. Brock has been fortunate to blend his love of baseball and his business skills in his career as a Minnesota Twins Baseball Corporate Sales Manager. Maiser and his wife Lisa live in Edina and are busy raising three children.

Katie (Sandvig) Ohrt - Class of '00

As an athlete and scholar, there is no single factor that contributed to Kate Ohrt's impressive accomplishment. She excelled in soccer a a four year letter winner, and as a two year captain. She was named All-Conference Honorable Mention her Junior year and All-Conference her senior year. She is particularly proud of scoring the winning goal that sent her team to the state Tournament her senior year. In basketball Ohrt was a three-time All Conference winner and was selected for the First Team All-Metro Defense her junior year. Ohrt also played golf, ran track and was the winner of the prestigious Athena Award. Ohrt attended Gustavus Adolphus College where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Mathematics and a minor in Coaching. There, Ohrt was a four year letter winner in basketball and was captain her senior year. Ohrt is currently a math teacher at Minnetonka Middle School East and was recently nominated as MN Teacher of the Year and was the winner of the Excellence Award at her school. Ohrt loves spending time with her husband Gabe and their friends.
